Teenage Pregnancies
This article focused on pregnant teens in Western Europe. Currently the highest teenage pregnancies rates in this area are in Britain. The London Daily Telegraph states that teenage pregnancies in England increased by 800 between 2001 and 2002, despite 15 million dollars spent by government on strategies to reduce them. One in every ten babies born in England has a teenage mother. Pregnancies under 18-year-olds rose from 38,439 in 2001 to 39,286 in 2002. Forty six percent of the 2001 pregnancies were aborted. Anne Weyman, chief executive of the Family Planning Association (FPA), believes that good sex and relationship education can be very effective. On the other hand Valerie Riches, the British right-to-life advocate, points out that abstinence education in the U.S. has resulted in a 10 percent drop in teenage pregnancies. The FPA, she states, confuses the childs mind about right and wrong and presents only one moral solution, the use of condoms. One FPA pamphlet tells young girls, "Contraceptive advice and supplies are free to everyone. It doesn't matter how old you are ... there's no right age to have sex." Everyone has their own opinion on teen pregnancy. This brings me to a couple questions on other rates of teen pregnancies in other countries, not just the US and Europe.

Smoking in Pregnant Teens
The overall rate of women who smoke during pregnancy has declined since 1990 to 2002. But recently 10 states have reported recent increases in the number of teen mothers smoking during their pregnancies. Data was collected from the birth certificates from 49 states and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention from the District of Columbia and New York City. Between 1990 and 2002, overall maternal smoking was a decrease of 38%. During 1995-1996 and 2001-2002, 16 states and New York City had significant declines in teen maternal smoking, but 15 states reported significant increases. Of these 15 states, 10 reported complete trend reversals around 1995-2002. These 10 states were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming. I wonder if there are any more states with pregnant teens and smoking on the rise.

Fewer Kids are Having Kids
This article states statistics supporting a decline in pregnant teens. The latest figures from CDC stated that 7,315 American girls ages 10 to 14 had babies in 2002. This is the lowest that number has been since 1946. All teen pregnancy rates are dropping but the most drastic are the most vulnerable, and youngest group. Compared with US babies ovearall, those of teen mothers are more likely to be born prematurely, with birth defects, and die within the first year. After reading this article im interested if any other statistics show the decline in teens getting pregnant.
Schneider, Mary Ellen. "Teen pregnancies may rise with notification laws.(Women's Health)." Family Practice News 35.5 (March 1, 2005): 56(1). Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. According to a study by Rachel Jones and her colleagues the new laws increase the risk of teen pregnancy. She supported this statement with a quote "Family planning clinics need to be supported in the work that they are doing with teens," One third of the teens Rachel studied said their parents did not know they were obtaining sexual health servives at the clinic. They listed these reasons for not informing there guardians.
-Not wanting parents to know of the teen's sexual activity.
-Not wanting parents to be disappointed by the teen's sexual activity.
-Not feeling comfortable with discussing sex with their parents.
-Not wanting parents to know the reason for the teen's clinic visit.
-Wanting to take responsibility for their own health.
Wendy Wright a CWA (Concerned Women for America) believes that "Adolescents benefit when their parents are involved in their lives, and policymakers shouldn't forbid their involvement in their daughters' and sons' most important decisions." I would like to know what others think about the laws and how they effect teens actions.
Goyer, Tricia. "When children have children: how this unique mops ministry delivers help and hope to teen moms.(Teen MOPS)." Today's Christian Woman 28.4 (July-August 2006): 56(4). This article, titled When Children Have Children, is about when Tricia Goyer went from an honor roll student to a teen mother. The article mentioned some statistics. According to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 34 percent of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20 (79 percent unwed). Almost 80 percent of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare. Also, children of teenage mothers have lower birth weights, are at greater risk of abuse and neglect, and are more likely to perform poorly in school. Tricia describes how she got through her hard times with mops. Mops is a group of teen mothers that get together share tips and are there for each other. It is also a christian group and Goyer says the women and religion have helped her along the way. Elizabeth Melvin, a coordinator for a group in Lakewood, Colorado said "Teen MOPS gives girls a peer group and an identity," In the group the girls swap strollers and clothes, while also babysitting for each other. A big part of mops is religion. The girls learn that they can turn to god and he loves them as they are. The article ended in a quote from Jennifer Drew about the women, "And they become more confident in their abilities as mothers. Isn't that what mothering support is all about?" I wanna know more about other programs for teen mothers and how to find out about them.

"Pregnant student banned from graduation takes the stage anyway.(EDUCATION)(Brief Article)." Jet 107.23 (June 6, 2005): 25(3). Student Resource Center - Gold. Thomson Gale. Alysha Cosby was a teen mother who attended St. Jude Educational Institute, a Roman Catholic high school in Montgomery, Alabama. She had finished all four years of highschool and it was graduation day. Unlike her classmates, Alysha was handed her diploma at her own home prior to the graduation. Crosby was banned from her own graduation (the father of the child was aloud to participate) Taking matters into her own hands, she attended the ceremony anyway. At the end of the program she announced her own name and walked across the stage as fellow classmates cheered and celebrated. Alysha's mother and aunt were escorted by police out of the church after she took her seat. In march of 2005 Crosby was told that she couldn't attend scool because of safety concerns and her name was not listed in the graduation program. The article ended with an inspiring quote from Alysha, "I worked hard throughout high school and I wanted to walk with my class." I want to know if other teen mothers have been banned from their graduations or is it a rule for the Roman Catholics.

Glazer, Sarah. "Preventing Teen Pregnancy." Sirs. 14 May 1993. Sirs. 2 Jan. 2007 . http://sks.sirs.com/cgi-bin/hst-article-display?id=SMD1409-0-190&artno=0000008917&type=ART&shfilter=U&key=teen%20pregnancy&res=Y&ren=Y&gov=Y&lnk=Y&ic=Y

This article went over the many sides, conflicts, and reasons for teen pregnancy. In the beginning there was an example of a teen who became pregnant several times, even after she tried a program to help teen mothers. It also answered the question, why are births to teens rising? The teen births are in a four year clime. Resulting in not enough contraceptives or the fathers of the children are older, and less likely to use protection. Marilyn B. Benoit explained that some teen mothers seek attention from others and that leads to a birth or fathers seek the manhood of having a child. Another question involved in this article was, Are school based clinics an appropriate vehicle for preventing teen pregnancy? This was followed by a 28 month long program that decreased pregnancy in the participating school by 30%. Recent studies revealed, however that traditional school based clinics did not give out contraceptives on site and some didn't even provide prescriptions for teens to get contraceptives. Throughout the years results show that the percents of teen pregnancies stayed the same. The article ended with some background information on sex education in the classroom and its overall effect is little to nothing. I would like to know more about current teen pregnancy rates throughout the country and the world.
